Florida One of Hungriest States

One in six residents is considered food insecure – meaning at some point during the month, they don't know where their next meal is coming from.

And Florida has 5 cities in the top 25 nationwide for food hardship – Orlando, Lakeland, Jacksonville, Tampa, and the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

Paul Clements of Second Harvest of the Big Bend says it's hard for people to ask for food.

"And it comes down to them getting very, very desperate. And it takes a lot out of someone to be able to walk into a food pantry line", explained Clements. "I know we've seen a lot of prior donors of ours who are now standing in our food pantry lines."

Clements says donations of both food and funds are off this year.

During the economic downturn, the number of Floridians getting food stamps nearly doubled.
