Even for longtime Southwest Florida residents with plenty of knowledge about our region’s wild spaces and their vast array of flora and fauna, there are still opportunities for surprises.

News-Press storyteller Amy Bennett Williams experienced one of these surprises on a recent trip to the Orange River, where among the wading birds, clams and blue crabs, she encountered a creature typically thought to only inhabit salt water environments.  However, as she tells us in this week’s essay, that’s not necessarily the case.
