Alleged Discrimination and Retaliation within the FMPD

Jeffrey Smith

A recent News-Press investigation by reporter Cody Delaney looks into allegations of a culture of racial discrimination and retaliation within the Fort Myers Police Department.  The report also finds allegations of unequal application of the law when it comes to officers dealing with white citizens versus minorities.  Five civil rights lawsuits have been filed by FMPD officers against the city or the police department, and six discrimination complaints have been filed with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission against the FMPD.  Interim Police Chief Dennis Eads denies allegations of a culture of retaliation.  Meanwhile, city officials are looking to hire a permanent police chief by the end of May from a diverse pool of more than 100 applicants.  We’ll take a closer look at the process and what officials are looking for in a police chief as we explore allegations and lawsuits filed against the department in recent years.
