Animal control agencies are encouraging pet adoptions during the holiday season, a practice that used to be discouraged. Now, if people are considering pets for holiday gifts, shelters in Lee and Collier Counties are encouraging people to consider shelter pets first.

Monday at 1:30 p.m. on Gulf Coast Live, join the conversation about bringing a shelter pet home for the holidays with Rachel Johnson from the Naples Humane Society and Karen Fordiani with the Lee County Domestic Animal Services. You can also address your pet health questions to Bonnie Tucker, an emergency veterinarian who will be joining the show.

Matthew Smith is a reporter and producer of WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live.
