Fish Finds for Meatless Holidays and Other Spring Food Traditions

Spring is the time of year for fasting for certain religions: Catholics and other Christians will forgo meat on Fridays for Lent, and numerous other religions will celebrate seasonal holidays with special foods that often observe specific rules and restrictions.

But where did these rules come from, and how do observers in Southwest Florida follow them?

Thursday at 1:30 p.m. on Gulf Coast Live, Dr. Melodie Eichbauer, an FGCU professor of medieval history, explains where these traditions came from and how they’ve evolved over time.

Also joining the show is Melissa Talmadge, chef of Sanibel's Sweet Melissa's Cafe, discussing local fish options that aren’t as ubiquitous as grouper or snapper, offering tips for those seeking to expand their “fish Fridays” and other meatless holidays.

Matthew Smith is a reporter and producer of WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live.
