AARP of Florida Weighs in on Ongoing Push for Healthcare Reform

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE / AP
House Speaker Paul Ryan uses charts and graphs to make his case for the GOP's plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act on March 9.

The AARP was among the groups who applauded last week's failure of the U.S. House of Representatives' healthcare overhaul. The AARP vocally opposed the plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, calling the replacement plan an “age tax.”

With the postponement of the healthcare overhaul, the organization is vowing to keep a close eye on other health care proposals as reform will likely be coming back before Congress, as more people over the age of 50 will be impacted in Florida than in any other state.

Tuesday at 1p.m., Florida AARP Executive Director Jeff Johnson explains what his organization didn't like in the proposed healthcare plan, and what the organization would want to see in future plans to meet the needs of graying Floridians. He'll also discuss the current state of health care for people over 50 in the state, and how AARP members reacted when it almost changed.

Matthew Smith is a reporter and producer of WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live.
