Theaters in South Florida, and across the United States, Canada, and Europe, are screening the film adaption of George Orwell's dystopian classic 1984 on Tuesday, Apr. 4. The date was chosen because it's the day Orwell’s protagonist, Winston Smith, begins his fight against "Big Brother" by keeping a forbidden diary.
The film is among several being screened in the Naples area in April stressing the need for vigilance against government overreach, an informed citizenry, and individual freedom.
Participating theaters in South Florida include Burns Court Cinemas in Sarasota, and the Silverspot Cinemas in Estero's Coconut Creek and Naples will be showing the movie. Miami Beach's Cinematheque and the O Cinema in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood are also screening the film.
Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. on Gulf Coast Live, Naples-based filmmaker K.C. Schulberg from the Collier Freedom group joins the show to talk about the local screenings of 1984 and related films in the month of April.
Collier County ACLU President David Goldstein is also joining the program to discuss the Q&A he'll be hosting on Apr. 4 after the screening.
Also joining the discussion is the Chair of FGCU Department of Language & Literature Dr. Kimberly Jackson, sharing her perspective on 1984 as a work of literature and how it resonates with readers today.
The discussion will also feature portions of an interview with Dr. Myra Mendible with FGCU's Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies.
