Sgt. Brian Turner is a U.S. Army veteran, who served in the Iraq War. A writer with an MFA before he was deployed, he decided to share his experience in the way he'd been trained — through poetry.

His work has received national acclaim in the last decade, and this week he visitsFGCUto speak about the complications of crafting art from memory and taking in the details while in the heart of a combat zone.

Turner joins Gulf Coast Live to give a preview of his upcoming lecture, which is free and open to the public on campus at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
