As sea surface temperatures have risen over the years, so have the frequency of what are called coral bleaching events. That’s when water gets too warm and corals expel the algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white. While this doesn’t necessarily kill the corals, it does put them under tremendous stress. This is a global phenomenon, and just one of the many threats reefs around the world are facing.

Last week, experts from around the world gathered in Key Largo for the Reef Futures 2018 Conference. They shared the latest science and techniques for coral reef restoration, and kicked off a global effort to dramatically scale-up the impact and reach of restoration as a tool for coral reef conservation and management. For the rest of the hour we’re going to get some of the conference highlights from Dr. Andy Bruckner, he is research coordinator at Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
