A traveling exhibition exploring the biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico and the ecological issues it faces is now on display at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers. The traveling collection, titled “Drifting Cabinets,” blends art and science and includes biological specimens, art, illustrations, videos, scientific instruments, books, artifacts, and music from contributing artists including Chip Lord, Kristin Lucas, Kevin Mahoney, Sean Miller, Dan Stepp, Bethany Taylor, Leah Floyd and Cristina Molina along with scientists Suzanne Fredericq, Verity Mathis, Joseph Ryan, Lisa Anne Taylor, and Thomas A. Webber.
The exhibition culminates Thursday evening with lectures from contributing artists Chip Lord, who is co-founder of the architecture/media/art collective “Ant Farm” and Florida-based artist and curator Sean Miller, who is the founder and director of the John Erickson Museum of Art (JEMA).
The event also includes a screening of Lord’s “https://vimeo.com/214534880">Miami Beach Elegy,” which serves as a visual poem about the massive investment required to keep the city of Miami above water.
