Forecasters predicted we would have an active hurricane season this year, and as summer progresses we are indeed off to a record start. Eleven named storms have already formed, the latest of which, Tropical Storms Marco and Laura, are currently forecast to impact the northern gulf coast.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is currently forecasting 19-25 named storms this year in all. That’s more than were predicted in 2005 — which was a record-setting hurricane season in the U.S.
We explore why this season is so active with Jeff Huffman, Chief Meteorologist and Director of the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.
We also discuss hurricane preparedness, and get some shelter advice during the time of COVID-19 with
Jennifer Trammell, Board Chair for the Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross.
