Red-Bellied Woodpecker

The Red-bellied Woodpecker is the most common woodpecker in Florida. It readily comes to feeders for seeds, fruit, or a peanut butter-cornmeal mixture – and to birdbaths for water. Its nest and roost cavities are usually in a dead tree or dead limb of a live tree and these cavities provide homes for a diversity of other wildlife. The Common Starling – an invasive-exotic competitor introduced more than a century ago from Europe – commonly takes over Red-bellied Woodpecker cavities in backyard habitats.
