FGCU Basketball Coach Enfield Hired by USC

Florida Gulf Coast University is starting a search for a new men’s basketball coach. FGCU coach Andy Enfield was hired by the University of Southern California in Los Angeles to be its new coach. Enfield led the young Eagles team to a record-breaking two wins in the NCAA tournament as a number 16 seed last month.

FGCU Athletics director Ken Kavanagh said in a press conference today he was grateful for everything Enfield has done for the school.

“We constantly talk about ourselves, ‘make us your hometown team,’ said Kavanagh. “And we not only did that for Southwest Florida I think we did it in many cases with the entire nation—and that’s a credit to Andy.”

Enfield was earning $157,000 a year at FGCU. ESPN reported he’ll earn more than one million dollars a year at his new gig.

Assistant Coach Marty Richter will be acting coach until a new hire is announced.
