After months of navigating single-lane traffic, motorists traveling to and from Pine Island again can use two lanes on the Little Pine Island Bridge.The use of the two-lanes marking a major milestone in the recovery and reconstruction efforts following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022. This change is expected to reduce congestion; however, drivers should still anticipate possible delays.

The Florida Department of Transportation has completed most of the construction work on the US 41 Caloosahatchee River Bridge a year ahead of schedule and as of Friday all travel lanes on the bridge are open.FDOT cautioned that the newly 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the span will remain closed until the end of this year or early 2025.Construction crews will continue working on-site to complete the sidewalk and other remaining tasks. This may require occasional lane closures at night through December and possibly beyond.

The Florida Department of Transportation has been able to get permits from the federal government, including for projects in Gov. Ron DeSantis’ “Moving Florida Forward” initiative, as a major legal battle continues over permitting for projects that affect wetlands, a department official said Thursday. Siding with environmental groups, U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss in February vacated a 2020 decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that shifted permitting authority from federal officials to the state.
