Hurricane Beryl made headlines across the country: from Texas, the Ohio River Valley, and eventually the parts of the Northeast.

eryl made landfall on the Texas coast near Matagorda early Monday with a dangerous storm surge and strong winds, the National Weather Service reported.The storm’s center hit land as a Category 1 hurricane around 4 a.m. Central Standard Time about 85 miles southwest of Houston with top sustained winds of 80 mph (128.7 kph) while moving north at 12 mph (19.3 kph).

Beryl began lashing Texas with rain and intensifying winds Sunday as coastal residents boarded up windows, left beach towns under evacuation orders and prepared for the powerful storm that has already cut a deadly path through parts of Mexico and the Carribean.

After a rash of rip current deaths in Florida, officials are urging people to stay extra vigilant the remainder of the holiday weekend as distant Hurricane Beryl churns up the surf along the Gulf Coast and southeastern U.S.

Beryl continues to hammer Jamaica on Wednesday, then the Cayman Islands. Long-term forecasts vary in final track and intensity.

After a deadly end to the month of June with rip current deaths, there will be a few days of calmer conditions before dangerous rip current risks arrive for the 4th of July holiday weekend.
