Lee County’s second medical marijuana dispensary opened yesterday.

In the 16 months since Amendment 2 passed in Florida, a company called Curaleaf has opened five dispensaries in the state.

 

WGCU's Rachel Iacovone took a tour of the new Fort Myers facility Tuesday. She joins Gulf Coast Live with a report on what’s available and how patients are accessing these products – ranging from capsules to vaporizer pens to oils.

A Fort Myers city councilman held a press conference Thursday to address the Dunbar dumpsite.

For decades during the 20th century, the city of Fort Myers dumped lime sludge in Dunbar — a predominately black neighborhood near downtown.

The most recent tests from near the dumpsite show arsenic levels that are five times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency's safe standard. Those tests were published at the end of last month.

More than four decades ago, Fort Myers city clerk Marie Adams reported to her first day of work with the City of Fort Myers as the secretary to the City Clerk. On Monday, after 43 years on the job, she celebrated retired from her job as City Clerk.

Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs took over the job of police chief position in August. Since then, he's pushed for more community engagement and equipped all of his officers with body cameras.

He's also seen the public release of a scathing audit that described a department crippled by a loss of personnel, allegations of corruption, and an understaffed police force failing to address "emerging threats" like growing gang violence.

The Fort Myers Police Department is outfitting all its uniformed patrol officers and sergeants with new body camera and taser technology.  Police Chief Derrick Diggs said the decision makes the FMPD one of the few in Florida to outfit all uniformed officers.
