Former Everglades City Mayor Arrested For Grand Theft

Former Everglades City Mayor Sammy Hamilton was arrested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Collier County Sheriff's Office. He is facing charges of one count of grand theft and 16 counts of official misconduct.

Open government advocates are urging Governor Rick Scott to veto a measure that would seal nearly three million criminal records from public view.

The bill started as a non-controversial proposal to crack down on internet publishers of police booking photos. But Sarasota Republican Greg Steube quietly added an amendment on the Senate Floor.

“This amendment addresses the concerns from FDLE and would enable the department to administratively seal the criminal record of a person found not guilty or where the charges against that person have been dismissed.”

State Attorney Steve Russell says the Punta Gorda Police officer who shot and killed a woman during a demonstration for citizens last August has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm. That charge against suspended police officer Lee Coel is a first degree felony. And Punta Gorda police chief Tom Lewis has been charged with Culpable Negligence in that case. That charge is a second degree misdemeanor.

Florida investigators over the last two years quietly launched new probes into murder and sexual abuse allegations associated with a shuttered Panhandle reform school.

But State Attorney Glenn Hess in late May concluded there wasn't any way to prosecute any alleged crimes because either there was not enough evidence or that too much time had passed to charge anyone.
