Anti-Obamacare Town Hall in Tampa

Aug 21, 2013

Heritage Action for America, a conservative group, is hosting a defund Obamacare town hall tonight in Tampa. People will hear remarks from former Senator and President of the group, Jim Demint.

Senator Ted Cruz stopped in Dallas Texas on Tuesday to talk about defunding the Affordable Care Act. Tonight, folks in the Tampa Bay region will hear from Rafael Cruz, Senator Ted Cruz's dad and also from Heritage Action president Jim Demint.

Heritage Foundation Florida regional coordinator Karen Jaroch says the town hall is to urge House members to fund the government fully but exclude the funding for the Affordable Care Act.

The state of Florida has not exactly been warm and welcoming to the Affordable Care act - better known as Obamacare. Florida was part of the lawsuit seeking to overturn Obamacare. That's the case in which the ACA was upheld by the Supreme Court.

But democrats are now charging that Florida's dragging its feet on Obamacare could potentially cost Floridians when it comes to their health insurance rates.

Florida Near Bottom in Federal Health Grants

Jul 25, 2013

Last summer, Florida won a $2.3 million federal grant to expand a program that answers questions about health insurance. It's called SHINE -- short for Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders -- but the grant would have let all ages take advantage of the service.

The grant was also going to give the program a direct, toll-free line.

Ten health insurance companies have applied to offer plans in Florida next year through the Affordable Care Act's online marketplace. Uninsured people can shop there for plans starting Oct. 1.

We won't know details like how much plans will cost until September, but at least we know there will be competition -- plenty of it.

The legislative session is over, the governor has signed the budget -- and he's considering the fate of other bills passed by lawmakers this year. Governor Scott and the legislature didn't see eye to eye on everything.

WUSF's Craig Kopp caught up with Angie Holan of PolitiFact Florida to discuss the differences between the two this year -- and how it's affecting Scott's record of promises kept.
