Hendry County officials are excited about a local water storage project that just broke ground. The C-43 West Basin Storage Reservoir will help water quality in the Caloosahatchee River and its Estuary. But officials say it will also bring jobs to a county that has the state’s highest unemployment rate.

A water storage project in Hendry County recently broke ground after more than a decade of planning. Water managers are clearing land for the Caloosahatchee River West Basin Storage Reservoir project, or C-43 reservoir. This project is meant to keep the Caloosahatchee Estuary healthy.

UPDATE: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the final count for the hunt was 298 bears.  

Florida ended its first black bear hunt in more than two decades this weekend. State wildlife officials said the goal was to control a bear population that has been rebounding after more than 40 years of conservation efforts.

Hendry County concluded an investigation Wednesday into two local primate breeding facilities. The county was concerned the companies were performing practices outside of their agricultural permits.

The county found no violations.

Hendry County Commissioners signed off on the first step Tuesday of a new process for approving power plants. Florida Power and Light submitted the proposal. The company has been looking at a piece of land in the county as the site of a potential power plant for years.
