Law Enforcement

An interactive report published on Wednesday by The Washington Post brings to light a dark fact about crime and violence in the city of Miami. The newspaper’s analysis of public records data shows that 60 percent of homicides in the city between 2007 and 2017 went unsolved, placing Miami towards the bottom of the 50 cities it analyzed.

Tampa Bay area counties – including Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota  - all saw decreases in total  crime between 3.3 and 14.2 percent, according to the 2017 Uniform Crime Report, which was released Tuesday.

Many Tampa Bay area law enforcement agencies are acting in what officials call an abundance of caution by increasing their presence in and around schools in the final days of the school year.

Broward County’s 911 system was widely criticized after communication failures during the 2017 airport shooting in Fort Lauderdale. Now it's under scrutiny again for similar failures during the Parkland shooting.

Files show that critical upgrades have been recommended on the system since at least 2016; most were never made.

St. Petersburg will not take 29 police officers off the street and place them in elementary schools. The city – following suit with Hillsborough and Pinellas counties - will instead hire armed security guards.
