David Williams and Alex Massie sat side by side at W.P. Franklin Lock along the Caloosahatchee River, waiting for something to nibble at their fishing lines. They were catching fish to eat, despite high levels of fecal bacteria recently closing down a beach just a few yards from their fishing spot. 

Williams, of Alva, said he's been fishing along the Caloosahatchee for 65 years. He's lived off of the river. And he's not concerned about the high levels of E. Coli in the water. 

"It's just a happening thing," Williams said. "There's nothing you can do about it."

With Facebook in the news lately because of privacy concerns about its business model I was reminded of a Gulf Coast Live show we did back in 2008. It was called Facebook…for Grown-Ups? My guest was Dr. Nicole Ellison, she was, and still is, an assistant professor in the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media at Michigan State University. She was doing research at the time on college students' use of Facebook, and its more established predecessor Myspace. She was looking at things like how it builds what she called ‘social capital’. Well, I sat down and re-listened to that show through today’s ears and wow, talk about a throwback Thursday!

Since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, schools across the state – and nation – are taking a hard look at their security measures. In Southwest Florida, Collier County Public Schools became the latest to address the public with plans for strengthening the current system.
