Cape Coral Mayor Joe Coviello died suddenly Wednesday from an unexpected medical incident.
A City of Cape Coral spokeswoman confirmed the death of the 65-year-old mayor in a statement that also requests privacy for Coviello’s family.
Coviello is survived by his wife, Diane, and two sons Ross and Alex.
Coviello was elected in 2017 and his mayoral term was set to run through 2022. Whether Governor Ron DeSantis will appoint a replacement or the city will hold a special election remains to be seen.
