License Plate Redesign on Hold

A proposal that would change the design and distribution of Florida license plates is on hold for at least another month. County tax collectors have come out against the plan to have private vendors issue the new plates.

Leon County Tax Collector Doris Maloy says outsourcing the work would hurt customer service.

“It would cost drivers more money and that system would provide no real benefit to the people”, said Maloy.

Because of the opposition, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles withdrew its request for approval by the Florida Cabinet Tuesday. Under the current proposal, 15 million license plates would be replaced starting in 2014.

The DMV says a redesign will enable cameras to easily read the plates of vehicles that run red lights and toll booths.

It’s been almost a decade since Florida last redesigned the license plates.
