Snooty the manatee drowned at age 69.

The South Florida Museumannounced the death of 69-year-old manatee Snooty, dubbed "the world’s oldest-known manatee," was the result of an accident that caused the aged marine mammal to drown. The manatee had entertained visitors in Bradenton since 1949.

According to the museum, the manatee was found in an underwater area designed to access the exhibit's plumbing and life support system. Museum officials say a panel, normally bolted shut, became dislodged and allowed Snooty to swim in to the area. A necropsy is set to be performed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Jessica Schubick, the communications manager with the South Florida Museum & Bishop Planetarium, joins Gulf Coast Live to discuss the manatee's legacy, the circumstances surrounding its death, and how the museum will continue its marine mammal outreach with its other manatees.

Matthew Smith is a reporter and producer of WGCU’s Gulf Coast Live.
