Charlotte County Commissioners Declare State of Emergency Ahead of Tropical Storm Laura

Floridastorms.org

The Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution on Saturday to declare a state of emergency in anticipation of the potential effects ofTropical Storm Laura.

The county’s director of emergency management, Patrick Fuller, briefed commissioners on the current projected path of the storm Saturday morning.

“We’re well on the right side of [the storm], the further west it goes, the less likely we would have any impacts here,” Fuller said. “Meaning any surge, wind or flooding chances would be reduced. But, again, if the center were to form further north, that would bring increased likelihood of impacts here locally.”

Commissioner Ken Doherty said passing the resolution would put the county in a position to deal with the storm’s impacts more quickly, whatever they might be.

“There’s no downside to adopting this resolution as far as I can see, it basically allows us to be prepared,” Doherty said. “Otherwise we would have to try and reconvene quickly on Monday if [the storm] does some kind of weird turn.”

The resolution was approved unanimously.
