The Republican Party of Florida issued a strong rebuttal to the ACLU of Florida last week.
On Thursday, the civil rights group marked the midpoint of Gov. Rick Scott’s term by talking about the 11 lawsuits they have filed against him and the Legislature in the past two years.
Scott and the Republican-led Florida Legislature have fought with the ACLU in court more than ever before in that time. The ACLU said in a press conference this week that it has been fighting a government hostile to civil rights.
However, Brian Burgess, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Florida thinks the group has been doing more harm than good.
“They are wasting taxpayer dollars repeatedly by thwarting the will of the voters,” Burgess explains. “The voters elected those representatives. They sent these representatives to Tallahassee and they pass laws and then the ACLU files a lawsuit. It’s almost an insult to the will of the public and the will of the voter.”
The ACLU and Republican lawmakers have battled it out over voting rights, drug testing and countless other issues over the past few years.
All the lawsuits from the past two years have already cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars.
