Nelson: "Stop this Nonsense" on Absentee Ballots

Sen. Bill Nelson is meeting with elections supervisors in Florida this week after a new state directive limited where absentee ballots can be collected.

For years, local supervisors have collected those ballots in sealed, locked ballot boxes at satellite voting sites like libraries. The new state rule would prohibit that. In Tampa Tusday, Nelson told reporters it's not a partisan issue but one about voting access.

"This is so obvious that it is making it harder to vote for average folks whether they're Republican or Democrat that we ought to stop this nonsense", said Nelson. "And I'm so proud of people like Craig and Mrs. Clark for standing up and saying I'm not going to do this."Hillsborough Elections Supervisor Craig Latimer and Pinellas Elections Supervisor Deborah Clark have both stated they plan to ignore the new state directive.

They say satellite drop-off sites for absentee ballots have been used for years with no problems. They are an alternative for voters who don't trust the mail and have difficulty traveling to the elections office.

  • White Ibises are common birds of Florida wetlands that increase in numbers with arrival of migrants from more northern areas. While they normally feed in shallow water, they have also become birds of grassy areas such as our yards, parks, and highway and canal rights-of-way. Adults have white plumage with only the tips of outer primaries black -- a characteristic that reduces wear of those feathers. Sex of adults is often easy to distinguish when the birds are in a group. Males are larger with a longer, straighter (but still curved) bill.Females are smaller with a shorter, often more-curved bill. Young White Ibises always have white on their underparts, but recent fledglings can be almost all gray-brown. Over their first year the more-gray plumage is replaced by brown and then gradually changes to the white of an adult. Through much of the year the legs, bill, and face of a White Ibis is flesh-colored or pink, but as nesting approaches the bill, face, and legs become vibrant red. Both sexes have beautiful light blue eyes.
