Jury Selection Begins In South Florida Imam Case

Jury selection began yesterday in the trial of two South Florida imams accused of financially supporting the Taliban.

Hafiz Khan and his 26-year-old son Izhar Khan are charged with funneling $50,000 to the Taliban in Pakistan.
Both men are U.S. Citizens originally born in Pakistan. Hafiz, now 77 years old, was the imam of a Miami mosque. His son was the imam of a mosque in Margate.

The two men were arrested in May of 2011. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and material support to terrorism, claiming they were trying to give money to family members affected by violence in Pakistan.

Huffington Post Miami reports that potential jurors were given 4-page questionnaires and that U.S. District Judge Robert Scola pointed out specific written questions that dealt with whether or not the juror can maintain fairness in a terrorism case.

The judge said that this trial could last up to 9 weeks.
