The American Heart Association  partnered with a national drugstore to provide free heart screenings for women throughout the month of February.

The AHA started the initiative Go Red For Women over a decade ago as a platform to share information about heart disease in women.

The AHA’s expert cardiologist for the initiative, Dr. Jennifer Mieres said women and men share similar risk factors for heart disease, but those same factors are much more potent and powerful in women.

Dr. Mieres also said heart disease and stroke is the leading killer of women in the United States and 80 percent of cases are preventable.

The AHA partnered with CVS Minute Clinics to provide heart screenings at no cost every Thursday during the month of February at locations across the country.
