A pelican rescue group is calling on state wildlife officials to increase patrols at a popular fishing pier in Manatee County where more than a dozen mutilated birds have been found over the past month.

The AP reports, state officials say the incidents are under investigation. Friends of the Pelicans says 16 disfigured birds have been discovered since early January on the Manatee County side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The organization says it has managed to save all but one of the wounded pelicans.

If you know what's happening to the pelicans, you can make an anonymous call to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922
