Cape Coral receives key permit for Yacht Club Community Park
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a critical permit for the Yacht Club Community Park renovation yesterday afternoon, bringing the City of Cape Coral one step closer to breaking ground on the park’s improvements.The environmental resource permit will now be sent to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), with federal approval anticipated in April 2025, barring unforeseen circumstances. Once received, the construction manager at risk will advertise the marine improvement portion of the project for construction bids, marking a significant step forward in the project.
Florida to hold record 126-day Gulf red snapper season for 2025
Florida will have a record-breaking 126-day Gulf Red Snapper recreational season for 2025, the longest season since Florida assumed management of Gulf red snapper. The expanded season as announced Monday by Governor Ron DeSantis includes additional summer and fall fishing days from 2024, offering anglers more opportunities to fish over major holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.
Sanibel's Lighthouse Beach now anchored by 32,000 new plantings
Over the past year, the City of Sanibel placed more than 400,000 tons of sand to restore beaches devastated by recent hurricanes. With that phase complete, the focus shifted to replanting the beaches to reinforce the natural dune structure. Over 32,000 plants of a variety of species were planted, strengthening the beach with their root systems.

FWC investigation confirms first fatal Florida bear attack in state
A fatal black bear attack that claimed the lives of an 89-year-old rural Collier County man and his dog this week has been confirmed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission.The confirmation of the attack that took place early Monday in the community of Jerome, was issued Friday. It was the first such confirmed attack in the state's history.
Public health alert issued for ineligible pork products imported from the Republic of Colombia
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is issuing a public health alert for potato chip products containing chicharrón (pork cracklings) that were imported from the Republic of Colombia. These items were shipped to distributors in Florida and New York and to retail locations nationwide.
