'The Sparrow Family' is the focus of 2025 Black Birders Week
Black Birders Week 2025 runs Sunday thru May 31 with the theme "The Sparrow Family."The annual week is organized by “The Black AF In STEM Collective” – a group which “seeks to support, uplift, and amplify Black Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics professionals in natural resources and the environment through professional development, career connection, and community engagement.”
Island Water Association requests members conserve water and follow irrigation schedule
Those using water from the Island Water Association for irrigation on Sanibel and Captiva are being asked to adhere to approved local watering schedules.The IWA issued a caution that ongoing dry weather and increased turf and landscape replanting related to redevelopment activity have created extremely high irrigation demands.

Little Pine Island Bridge finally reopens with two lanes of traffic
After months of navigating single-lane traffic, motorists traveling to and from Pine Island again can use two lanes on the Little Pine Island Bridge.The use of the two-lanes marking a major milestone in the recovery and reconstruction efforts following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022. This change is expected to reduce congestion; however, drivers should still anticipate possible delays.
Big Cypress National Preserve issues temporary trail closure
A temporary trail closure in the Big Cypress National Preserve is in effect after the discovery Saturday of a more than 340-acre fire east of State Road 29 and north of Deep Lake.The temporary closures include the Deep Lake Trail (including Trail Head) and the Fire Prairie Trail. During the closure all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas.

There is some relief for the many Southwest Florida business owners still navigating hurricane insurance claims and facing urgent rebuilding needs.Just in time for Small Business Week (May 4-10), the Small Business Administration has extended a critical 60-day grace period for Hurricane Helene and Milton survivors to apply for disaster recovery assistance.

Naples Botanical Garden uses prescribed fire to cut wildfire fuel
Naples Botanical Garden is conducting a prescribed fire on approximately 2 acres in the facility's preserve, beginning late Tuesday morning and lasting several hours. Fire-certified garden staff will monitor the area into the evening and the following days to ensure no hot spots go undetected.
