FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Manatee County opens Saturday
FEMA will be opening a Disaster Recovery Center in Manatee County beginning tomorrow to help Florida storm survivors.The Disaster Recovery Center will open Saturday, Aug. 17 from 1 – 7 p.m. at the Lakewood Ranch Library (16410 Rangeland Pkwy, Bradenton, FL., 34211). The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily after that.
Seventeenth Florida panther killed; death reported in Glades County
The seventeenth Florida panther death was reported Friday by the Florida Wildlife Commission. It was the sixteenth big cat death by vehicle impact in 2025.
Johnson County, Iowa, Renames Itself After A Different Johnson

Orange County lawmakers Friday backed a longshot proposal that could essentially return to the Walt Disney Co. control of a special taxing district that was revamped after Gov. Ron DeSantis got into a feud with the entertainment giant.In a voice vote, members of the Democrat-dominated Orange County legislative delegation supported a proposed House bill that seeks another redo of the former Reedy Creek Improvement District. The proposal would repeal a law passed last year that renamed the Reedy Creek district as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and gave DeSantis authority to appoint the district’s board.
