Big Cypress National Preserve issues temporary trail closure
A temporary trail closure in the Big Cypress National Preserve is in effect after the discovery Saturday of a more than 340-acre fire east of State Road 29 and north of Deep Lake.The temporary closures include the Deep Lake Trail (including Trail Head) and the Fire Prairie Trail. During the closure all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas.

Grace period extended for small businesses looking for aid after hurricanes Helene and Milton
There is some relief for the many Southwest Florida business owners still navigating hurricane insurance claims and facing urgent rebuilding needs.Just in time for Small Business Week (May 4-10), the Small Business Administration has extended a critical 60-day grace period for Hurricane Helene and Milton survivors to apply for disaster recovery assistance.

Naples Botanical Garden uses prescribed fire to cut wildfire fuel
Naples Botanical Garden is conducting a prescribed fire on approximately 2 acres in the facility's preserve, beginning late Tuesday morning and lasting several hours. Fire-certified garden staff will monitor the area into the evening and the following days to ensure no hot spots go undetected.

South Venice community cleanup day slated for Oct. 18
Sarasota County is hosting a community cleanup day for South Venice on October 18 from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents are encouraged to throw out old household items and yard waste. Free dumpsters for residential customers of Sarasota County Neighborhood Services will be stationed at the South County Courthouse.

New LeeTran app helps book ADA, Transportation Disadvantage trips
LeeTran is announcing a new mobile app, LeeTran Passport, for ADA (Passport) and Transportation Disadvantaged services.Passport service riders now will be able to book trips up to 14 days in advance, directly through the app from their mobile device or from their computer. The app is available in the Google Play or Apple App store.
Court orders special recall election for the Town of Fort Myers Beach on Nov. 4
A special election has been set for Nov. 4, 2025, for a Special Recall Election for the Town of Fort Myers Beach Council Members John R. King and Karen Woodson.The town was informed of the date by Chief Judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit Court J. Frank Porter.
Changes may affect out-of-county and out-of-state use for those using LeeWay transponders
There are some additional areas where LeeWay transponders are accepted and one area where they no longer operate.Lee County’s Department of Transportation and LeeWay said that the transponders now have interoperability with Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
