Registered nurse members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United protested Thursday morning asking for safe staffing levels and patient safeguards amidst the rapid introduction of artificial intelligence technologies. The nationwide protests included nurses at HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Old tires are notoriously effective mosquito-breeding habitats. Lee County Mosquito Control will accept passenger car tires at an event rescheduled for Jan. 11 due to Hurricane Milton in October.
Prescribed burn planned in CREW area off Corkscrew Road in Collier
The South Florida Water Management District plans to conduct a 109-acre prescribed burn in the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) Management Area in Collier County today. The burn unit is in the CREW Management Area and approximately 5 miles south of state route 82 and 1 mile east of Corkscrew Road. Smoke may be visible in the area of the burn.
Red Cross offering financial assistance to Floridians impacted by hurricanes Helene, Milton
Individuals impacted by Hurricanes Helene or Milton may be eligible for financial assistance through the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is providing financial assistance to Floridians whose homes suffered major damage or were destroyed by the hurricanes and who still face obstacles in their recovery. Red Cross financial assistance is not a loan and does not need to be repaid.
Sea turtle nest counts for 2024: lower numbers for some species, solid, record numbers for others
The Florida Fish and Wildlife's Research Bulletin for February reports that 2024 nesting numbers for sea turtles were no surprise, recording lower numbers for some species but also posting solid and record-breaking counts for other species.The counts are the result of the Florida Index Nesting Beach Survey which records sea turtle nest counts on a standardized set of index beaches. Researchers use the annual survey to determine nesting trends.
South Trail firefighter/EMT identified as victim of explosion, fire at his San Carlos Park home
The victim of a house explosion and fire in San Carlos Park Wednesday morning has been identified as South Trail Fire Department firefighter and EMT Mike McCarty.
