Understanding the ins and outs of city government is the outcome for those attending the eight-week North Port University program.North Port residents and business owners can participate in the third session of the program, which gets started at 6 p.m. Thursdays beginning Aug. 7.

Naples Botanical Garden is conducting a prescribed fire on approximately 2 acres in the facility's preserve, beginning late Tuesday morning and lasting several hours. Fire-certified garden staff will monitor the area into the evening and the following days to ensure no hot spots go undetected.
FPL warns about "phantom energy," shares how to save
Even household devices that appear to be turned off can still use power when plugged in. Coffee makers, toasters, gaming consoles, cable boxes and printers use standby power to keep lights and displays on, using what Florida Power and Light calls "phantom energy."

South Venice community cleanup day slated for Oct. 18
Sarasota County is hosting a community cleanup day for South Venice on October 18 from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents are encouraged to throw out old household items and yard waste. Free dumpsters for residential customers of Sarasota County Neighborhood Services will be stationed at the South County Courthouse.

Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club will hold its second annual Thanksgiving Food Drive on November 22 in the parking lot of the Punta Gorda Walmart on Jones Loop Road. It will benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society's Punta Gorda food pantry.

New LeeTran app helps book ADA, Transportation Disadvantage trips
LeeTran is announcing a new mobile app, LeeTran Passport, for ADA (Passport) and Transportation Disadvantaged services.Passport service riders now will be able to book trips up to 14 days in advance, directly through the app from their mobile device or from their computer. The app is available in the Google Play or Apple App store.
Coast Guard rescues eight from disabled boat off Venice
A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued eight boaters Saturday after their 26-foot vessel became disabled in the Gulf about 35 miles west of Venice.The boaters and vessel were brought back to a Venice Inlet boat ramp with no reported injuries.
