Former Orlando attorney gets prison following investigation into client fund misappropriation
Stephen Jones, a former attorney from Orlando, was sentenced to 42 months in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, for Scheme to Defraud over $50,000, a first-degree felony, for misappropriating funds that were due to a former client. One of the issues involved a Lee County case where court documents said Jones stole $100,000 in insurance proceeds from the insurance settlement of a Vietnam veteran, who was hit by a bicycle in Lehigh Acres in 2019.
Lake Okeechobee Waterway navigation locks remain in operation despite government shutdown
While the U.S. government shutdown has affected a wide variety of federal operations across the U.S. and Florida, there remains one aspect that isn't — Lake Okeechobee's navigation locks.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a statement Thursday that stressed the navigation locks along the Okeechobee Waterway would remain open and staffed during the U.S. government shutdown.

Nationwide recall for pulled pork sandwich contaminated by plastic
Nearly 130,000 pounds of a pulled pork sandwich product is being recalled nationwide due to possible plastic contamination. E.A. Sween Company, an Eden Prairie, Minn. establishment, is recalling approximately 127,887 pounds of Deli Express sandwiches, a pulled pork sandwich product that may be contaminated with pieces of plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Monday.
'Hundreds' of children said rescued in statewide operation; Twenty-nine in Fort Myers
A statewide rescue operation has reportedly recovered 122 children and is being touted as "one of the largest child-recovery operations in American history." Specific details were not available "due to the victims being children, many details are withheld for confidentiality reasons," a spokesperson for the Florida Attorney General's office said.
Fort Myers man convicted in 2016 Club Blu double murder case
Demetrius O’Neal was convicted of two counts of second degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder for his role in the Club Blu mass shooting in Fort Myers on July 25, 2016. In that incident an 18-year-old and a 14-year-old were shot to death outside of Club Blu, 14 others were injured. The jury returned the guilty verdict Friday afternoon, in a trial that began October 7, in a Lee County court.
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to host boating safety course on December 20
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Station on Fort Myers Beach will host a "Boat America" Responsible Boating Course on Dec. 20 from 8 am to 5 pm at the Pine Ridge Community Center, 15660 Pine Ridge Road, Fort Myers. The session will cover safe boating practices, navigational tools, equipment use, and more.
Undocumented Cuban found guilty in theft of trailers meant for those displaced by Hurricane Ian
Florida's Office of Statewide Prosecution secured the conviction of Ivan Gutierrez Miranda for stealing and reselling trailers meant for recovering hurricane victims who lost and were rebuilding their homes. Miranda was found guilty of a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) violation, Conspiracy to Commit RICO, Organized Scheme to Defraud, and five counts of Dealing in Stolen Property.
