Recall upgraded to serious for grated Pecorino Romano cheese
The FDA has expanded the recall of select Pecorino Romano cheese products after routine testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was reclassified as Class I on Jan. 6, nearly two months after first classifying the recall. The products could cause serious adverse health issues is consumed, according to the FDA.
Eleven tons of peanut butter & jelly -- a lot of love to soothe hunger from Community Cooperative drive
Eleven tons of peanut butter and jelly. That's how much of the lunchtime staple Community Cooperative brought in during its annual Southwest Florida PB&J Drive.Each year, the PB&J Drive invites local businesses, churches, schools, and communities to compete for the coveted title of “Most Love Collected,” all in support of fighting summer hunger for local children and families. This year’s drive saw dozens of dedicated groups participating and spreading awareness, compassion, and kindness — one jar at a time.
Red flag warning issued for much of Southwest Florida on Friday
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning from noon to 7 p.m. today for Southwest Florida areas including Lee, DeSoto, Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties.A combination of warm temperatures this afternoon, low relative humidity values, and sustained winds greater than 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph will create Red Flag conditions across much of west central and Southwest Florida this afternoon.At the same time a number of brush fires were being fought.

More than $38 million awarded for state's small, rural communities
More than $38 million was awarded Thursday to 19 small and rural Florida communities through the Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. These strategic investments will fund public infrastructure improvements, neighborhood revitalization, housing rehabilitation, and commercial revitalization projects that strengthen communities across the state.One of the largest awards — $6.4 million— went to the city of Arcadia to upgrade the William Tyson Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Deadline is Dec. 8 for low-interest federal loans for damage caused by the February 2025 drought
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reminds small businesses and private nonprofits in Florida that they have until Dec. 8 deadline to apply for low interest federal disaster loans to offset economic losses caused by the drought occurring Feb. 11, 2025.The disaster declaration covers Broward, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties.
Chicken corn dog and ground turkey on a stick items recalled
Foster Poultry Farms of California is recalling approximately 3,961,138 pounds of chicken corn dog products that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically pieces of wood embedded in the batter. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall Friday.
Health alerts issued for Caloosahatchee River-Sebastian Canal and North Gulf Shore Beach Access Clam Pass Beach
A health alert is being re-issued for the presence of harmful blue-green algae toxins in the Sebastian Canal off the Caloosahatchee River and another for or Enterococcus bacteria at North Gulf Shore Beach Access Clam Pass Beach.
