FGCU awarded largest grant in the school's history for Southwest Florida Equitable Jobs Pipeline
Florida Gulf Coast University and its partner, the FutureMakers Coalition at the Collaboratory in downtown Fort Myers, has been awarded a $22.9 million dollar grant. The grant will help fund an effort to fundamentally change how people are trained and jobs are filled in Southwest Florida and beyond.

Preliminary estimates put Hurricane Ian's economic impact to the ag industry between $786 million and $1.56 billion
Hurricane Ian impacted nearly 5-million acres of farm and grazing land, with about 700-thousand acres receiving Category 4 force winds. According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences, or IFAS, early estimates put the economic impact just to agriculture in Florida at somewhere between 786 million and 1.56 billion dollars with citrus and vegetables most affected.

We meet the new Collier County Waterkeeper, Ray Bearfield. Bearfield is a former fishing guide and educator at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, who first came to Naples in the mid-1970s as an editor of The Naples Daily News. He has written extensively about Southwest Florida for the Coastal Conservation Association, Florida Sportsman magazine, The Miami Herald and other publications.

'Reflections of a Colored Girl'
Beginning Wednesday, August 9 WGCU will begin airing a new essay series called “Reflections of a Colored Girl” by Dr. Martha Bireda. Dr. Bireda was born in southwest Florida in 1945 but spent the first 10 years of her life in a small town in Western Virginia. Her family then moved back to Punta Gorda, where they have deep roots. We sat down with Dr. Bireda to talk about her new essay series, and what she hopes to pass along with it.
