  • In observance of National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Wiggins Pass Flotilla is hosting events to celebrate and educate in Southwest Florida. National Safe Boating Week will take place from May 17 through May 23 this year. Florida is one of the most popular states for boating, with 81 percent of the state’s boating deaths being caused by drowning. Here is a full list of local National Safe Boating Week events.
  • Cold weather conditions continuing through the end of the week has preparations being made for sheltering availability by Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota officials.
  • A federal jury has found Craig Austin Lang, 35, guilty of multiple charges stemming from the death of a couple in Estero in 2018. The charges against Lang include conspiracy to commit robbery affecting commerce and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, robbery interfering with commerce, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which resulted in death, conspiring to kill persons in a foreign country and a violation of the Neutrality Act.
  • Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling approximately 4,874,815 pounds of foodservice ready-to-eat frozen chicken products that may be contaminated with pieces of metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Saturday.
  • The Harry Chapin Food Bank is declaring an emergency as the federal government shutdown enters its fifth week with thousands of Southwest Florida families struggling to put food on the table, SNAP benefits about to be paused and federal employees in critical roles such as transportation and public safety continuing to go unpaid.
  • Lee County drivers have a little more than a month to prepare to do what they should have been doing all along. Stop for school buses. The month-long grace period is part of a Lee County school district program making bus safety a priority. The district plan will capture video evidence of drivers illegally passing stopped school buses.
  • The Sarasota County Fire Department wants the community to have a safe holiday season by sharing safety tips and demonstrating the possible dangers of a dry tree and flammable holiday décor. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage or against the home outside. Decorations should be at least three feet away from heat sources.
  • Charlotte County Animal Control, in coordination with the Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County, has issued a 30-day rabies alert following confirmation that a bat in the McKee Street/Bennett Drive area of Port Charlotte tested positive for rabies.
  • Three black bears have been killed in an area of Collier County that saw a man and a dog fatally attacked on Monday.The early Monday attack resulted in the death of 89-year-old Robert Markel in the rural community of Jerome. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is continuing to investigate the attack which occurred in the area of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
  • The Lee County Board of Commissioners voted to approve grants Tuesday for Caloosahatchee-based water projects, gave the nod to a contract to design drainage improvements in Fort Myers Shores, Russell Park and Iona and approved an agreement to add turn lanes and a traffic signal at Lee Boulevard and Leonard Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.The two water-quality projects approved will allow the county to construct projects to improve water quality flowing to the Caloosahatchee.
