Private event raises $1 million Nov. 7 for Harry Chapin Food Bank
Nearly half a billion dollars in disaster recovery funds coming from FEMA to several counties
Several Southwest Florida counties will share in nearly half a billion dollars in FEMA public assistance recovery funds for Floridians impacted by disaster. The funds will be distributed through FEMA’s Public Assistance program to support more than 500 recovery projects across the state. This money is disbursed to the state and local communities for disaster recovery projects.
US 41 Caloosahatchee Bridge open after months of closure
The Florida Department of Transportation has completed most of the construction work on the US 41 Caloosahatchee River Bridge a year ahead of schedule and as of Friday all travel lanes on the bridge are open.FDOT cautioned that the newly 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the span will remain closed until the end of this year or early 2025.Construction crews will continue working on-site to complete the sidewalk and other remaining tasks. This may require occasional lane closures at night through December and possibly beyond.
DOH-Lee issues red tide alert for Gasparilla Island State Park Beach
The Florida Department of Health in Lee County has issued a health alert for the presence of red tide near Gasparilla Island State Park Beach. This is in response to a water sample taken on December 30.
National Park Service issues record of decision on Big Cypress National Preserve Backcountry Access Plan, Wilderness Study
Big Cypress National Preserve on Monday issued the record of decision (ROD) for the Preserve’s Backcountry Access Plan / Wilderness Study / Environmental Impact Statement. The ROD identifies the alternative selected for implementation and concludes the environmental review process. The selected action serves as a blueprint to guide the NPS's management of the Preserve’s backcountry access and use and will provide new access to the Preserve while protecting natural and cultural resources and providing for public enjoyment.

Fort Myers resident Annabelle Tometich’s compelling recounting of growing up biracial in Southwest Florida in her book The Mango Tree has been awarded the prestigious Southern Book Award.Her book joins two other Southern Book Award winners this year: Rednecks by Taylor Brown (St. Martin’s Press) in Fiction, and Not Like Other Girls by Meredith Adamo (Bloomsbury YA) in Young Readers. Winning authors receive a donation in their name to the charity or nonprofit of their choice.
