Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park gains more than 60 newly conserved acres, further connecting the world’s largest subtropical strand swamp.
Mandatory irrigation connection letters mailed to properties in NE Cape Coral water-shortage area
Around 1,000 properties in Northeast Cape Coral will be required to connect to the city irrigation system within six months according to letters just issued from the city.The connection demand comes as part of an emergency order contained in a November 2023 ordinance. The ordinance was created in response to issues with the Mid-Hawthorne Aquifer, the underground water source for the portion of Cape Coral affected.Only properties in the water-shortage area served by the aquifer and only where City irrigation service is already available will be affected.
Cargill Kitchen Solutions recalls liquid egg products due to an unapproved substance
More than 212,000 pounds of liquid egg products that may contain a cleaning solution with sodium hypochlorite is being recalled nationwide, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Friday.The liquid egg items, from Cargill Kitchen Solutions, a Lake Odessa, Michigan establishment, were produced on March 12 and 13, 2025.After conducting an investigation and thorough assessment of the contents of the cleaning solution, FSIS scientists concluded that use of this product should not cause adverse health consequences, or the risk is negligible, resulting in a Class III recall.
Ben Quartermaine named first director of Sarasota County's new Stormwater Department
Ben Quartermaine has been selected as the county’s director of the newly structured Stormwater Department. Sarasota County leaders voted Tuesday to create a separate stormwater department — breaking it off from Public Works — just days after a joint investigation by Florida Trident and Suncoast Searchlight revealed systemic mismanagement ahead of catastrophic flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.The decision, which includes hiring a new department head, came during a tense budget workshop marked by blistering public criticism. Residents packed the small meeting chambers, demanding accountability from Public Works Director Spencer Anderson and County Administrator Jonathan Lewis for what they described as years of neglect and failed leadership.

A line of merchandise sold by the Florida Republican Party with branding for the state's newest immigration deportation facility — Deportation Depot — has been removed from the party's website.Shortly after the new facility was announced, the merchandise was listed for sale at the state GOP's website.
FWC places mobile trap on FGCU campus as bear sightings rise
Multiple sightings of a bear on the main part of the FGCU campus in recent days has prompted the placement of a trap on campus.The University Police Department urged people stay clear of the trap. UPD asked people not approach the trap, but report — from afar — if anything is seen inside.
Two million pounds of pork jerky recalled; possible contamination; distributed to Costco, Sam's Club
Approximately 2,277,540 pounds of a ready-to-eat Korean barbecue pork jerky product shipped to Costco and Sam's Club sites nationwide that may be contaminated with pieces of metal is being recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.The affected jerky product made by LSI, Inc., an Alpena, S.D. establishment, has a one-year shelf-life with “best by” dates ranging October 23, 2025, through September 23, 2026, printed on the side of the packaging.
Ready-to-eat breakfast burrito, wrap products recalled due to possible listeria contamination
A possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination is prompting a recall of more than 90,000 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burrito and wrap products containing egg. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announce the recall Saturday by M.C.I. Foods Inc., a Santa Fe Springs, Calif., establishment, of approximately 91,585 pounds of a specific lot of the product.
