Nutrition education and better access to dairy products for those in uncertain food situations got a boost this week with a $10,000 donation to the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Florida Dairy Farmers.
Acreage acquisition expands Florida’s protected lands with major conservation investment; Collier-Hendry corridor included
Nearly 4,000 acres in Collier and Hendry counties are part of a nearly 35,000-acre package of what is labeled as critical conservation land approved for protection Wednesday.Additionally, approval of a permanent agricultural land conservation easement for a nearly 4,000-acre area in Charlotte County will help support Southwest Florida’s water resources.The approval came via Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet through the Florida Forever Program and legislative appropriations, marking a significant step in preserving the state’s natural heritage.
Ex-soldier turned foreign fighter extradited to face charges in 2018 double homicide, robbery in Estero
A man allegedly involved in a Estero shooting that left a Florida couple dead in April 2018 is being extradited from the Ukraine to the United States to stand trial on federal charges. Craig Austin Lang, 34, Surprise, Arizona, along with co-defendant Alex Jared Zwiefelhofer, 27, Bloomer, Wisconsin, was charged in 2019 in a conspiracy to commit robbery and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, robbery interfering in commerce, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which resulted in the death of of Brooksville, Florida, residents Serafin "Danny" Lorenzo, 53, and Deana K. Lorenzo, 51.
‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive targets shrinking federal aid, collects nearly 65,000 pounds of food Saturday in Lee County
An annual collection of packaged food items carried out this weekend by the men and women who normally just deliver the mail, may be the only way to help plug holes developing in the social assistance safety net.Saturday was the national Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and letter carriers across the U.S. were gathered non-perishables to be distributed to those in need.

Foreign fighter sentenced to consecutive life prison sentences for 2018 double homicide and armed robbery of couple in Estero
An American citizen who fought as an independent militia in Ukraine has been sentenced to consecutive life sentences in federal prison as a result of his convictions for conspiracy to commit robbery and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, robbery interfering with commerce, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence which resulted in death, conspiring to kill persons in a foreign country, and a violation of the Neutrality Act. Lang was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $10,886 to the family members of the victims of the offenses. Craig Austin Lang, 35, of Surprise, Arizona, was sentenced by United States District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell.

The Lee Board of County Commissioners Tuesday addressed a number of issues including work on expanding the Cape Coral Bridge, repair of the Matlacha drawbridge, repair of boardwalks at several county park sites, and addressing illegal dumping in the county.
Shore and beachline projects, vegetation removal and public safety drones top Lee Commissioner action
Nearly $6.5 million in Tourist Development Tax revenue is being used to authorize work and reimburse expenses for a number of agreements across the county.Commissioners also voted to leverage additional drone technology to enhance efforts to ensure public safety by approving the purchase of four autonomous drones to be based across Lee County.
LeeCares application deadline for properties damaged by Hurricanes Helene and Milton is March 31
Income-eligible homeowners seeking assistance to repair, replace or reconstruct property that was damaged by Hurricane Helene and/or Milton have until March 31 to file applications to LeeCares before the application portal closes.
