The need for food assistance remained vital for many in Southwest Florida in 2024 as evidenced by a more than 10 percent increase in food distribution — more than 4 million pounds — reported by the Harry Chapin Food Bank.Additionally, Chapin reported large upticks in several children-focused food distribution programs.Chapin's distribution of 39.5 million pounds of food through its Feeding Network in 2024 equates to an additional 3 million meals served to neighbors across Southwest Florida.
FWC investigation confirms first fatal Florida bear attack in state
A fatal black bear attack that claimed the lives of an 89-year-old rural Collier County man and his dog this week has been confirmed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission.The confirmation of the attack that took place early Monday in the community of Jerome, was issued Friday. It was the first such confirmed attack in the state's history.
Dunbar High School places third statewide in FPL/NASCAR-supported EV race
Zipping around the Daytona International Speedway, an EV racer piloted by a student from Dunbar High School managed a second place finish, allowing the Lee County high school team a third-place overall in the FPL Electrathon Speedway Series.The FPL Electrathon Speedway Series is a year-long student EV go-kart racing competition that wrapped up at Daytona Tuesday.

Cape Coral man among 324 charged in connection with over $14.6 billion in alleged fraud
A Cape Coral man is one of nearly 20 Floridians charged in a nationwide health care fraud case.Eric Strom Holland, 55, was charged with wire fraud and distributing and dispensing controlled substances in connection with an alleged scheme to deceive doctors into writing controlled substance prescriptions based on false pretenses.The charges stem from the 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown, which resulted in criminal charges against Holland and 323 other defendants, including 96 doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other licensed medical professionals, in 50 federal districts and 12 State Attorneys General’s Offices across the United States, for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes involving over $14.6 billion in intended loss.

Alert issued for ready-to-eat meals with pasta that may be contaminated with listeria
A public health alert has been issued for several ready-to-eat meal varieties at Walmart and Trader Joes due to possible listeria contamination.The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issue the alert for ready-to-eat meals containing a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated pre-cooked pasta that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm).
Peanut butter drive is on in several Florida counties
From Monday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Oct. 31, UF/IFAS Extension Manatee County as well as several other Manatee locations will be collecting unopened jars of peanut butter (any size) to support local food banks and animal shelters in Manatee County. Sarasota and Charlotte counties are also participating.
