'Loper,' a young panther hit by vehicle near Fort Myers, completes rehab at ZooTampa; stays as 'conservation ambassador'
The rehabilitation of a young Florida panther injured in a vehicle collision is being recognized as a powerful example of statewide collaboration among wildlife and veterinary partners working together to protect one of Florida’s most iconic endangered animals. ZooTampa at Lowry Park played a key role in the panther’s survival and has now provided him a permanent home as a conservation ambassador. The panther, named "Loper," will remain at the zoo permanently and serve an important purpose in helping guests understand the threats facing Florida panthers and the need to protect the habitat they depend on.

Recall of turkey bacon, health alert for beef jerky stick product issued due to possible contamination
A recall and a health alert have been issued for two different meat products — turkey bacon due to a possible listeria contamination and a beef jerky stick for an extraneous material contamination.Kraft Heinz Foods Company is recalling approximately 367,812 pounds of fully cooked turkey bacon products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.The FSIS also issued a health alert for possible contamination of a beef jerky stick product.
CDC: Additional illnesses reported from prepared pasta meals contaminated with Listeria
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is reporting seven more illnesses have been reported linked to prepared pasta meals that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. CDC and states are working to get information on whether sick people ate recalled food or if additional foods may be contaminated. Twenty-seven people have been affected across 18 states, including Florida, with 25 hospitalized, and there have been six deaths.
Multiple counties activate cold-weather outreach as temps forecast to plunge
With an oncoming forecast of low temperatures in the next few days, Lee, Charlotte. Collier, Hendry and Sarasota counties are coordinating with partner agencies for cold weather outreach.

The odds of significant cold, coastal, and marine impacts across South Florida this weekend and beyond continues to increase. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for the Lake Okeechobee region and coastal Palm beach County and a Freeze Watch is in effect for inland Collier, Miami Dade and Broward counties. Wind chills could drop into the 20s across all of South Florida early Sunday morning. Very breezy conditions are expected on Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning as the strong cold front pushes through the area. Sustained winds 15-25 mph could gust up to 40 mph, with highest winds likely along the immediate coastlines. A Gale Watch is in effect for local waters beginning on Saturday afternoon and evening. Sustained winds of 30-40 knots with higher gusts is possible across the Atlantic and Gulf waters through Sunday afternoon. Wave heights could peak as high as 12 feet across the Gulf and Atlantic waters during the day on Sunday as well.
Continued cold temperatures prompts shelter preparations across Southwest Florida
More cold temperatures expected for much of the Southwest Florida over the next few days has several counties setting up cold weather shelters.
USDA alert warns of ground beef possibly contaminated with E. coli; recall issued for meat products from two other companies
Meat products produced by two companies are being recalled and an alert was issued for ground beef distributed to a popular retail outlet and possibly contaminated with E. coli, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.
