Powerful Pacific swell brings the threat of more dangerous surf to California
The ocean was less violent Friday but the National Weather Service warned that another round of extremely dangerous surf conditions would return Saturday.
A Colorado man is dead after a pet Gila monster bite
Christopher Ward was taken to a hospital shortly after being bitten by one of his two pet Gila monsters on Feb. 12. He was soon placed on life support and died Friday, Lakewood police said Tuesday.
Big Cypress National Preserve temporarily closing Wagon Wheel area for prescribed fire
Big Cypress National Preserve has issued a temporary closure to promote visitor safety during prescribed fire activity beginning Thursday. During the closure all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas.

A more severe strain of mpox has been detected in the U.S. for the first time
The patient was traveling from East Africa, where the mpox disease is endemic. The CDC says the strain does not present a high risk to the general population.
