Art Center Sarasota celebrates its 100th year, among 32 local art shows this month
From Sarasota to Marco Island and Venice and Sanibel to Arcadia and LaBelle, Southwest Florida is home to more than a dozen art centers. Most host visual art exhibitions showcasing member, regional and nationally renowned artists that change every month. In October, there are 32 shows at these venues, underscoring the importance of the arts in our part of the country.

This week, three shows open at Southwest Florida equity and community theaters: "A Piece of My Heart" at The Naples Players, "Birthday Candles" at Florida Studio Theatre and "Julius Caesar" at the Laboratory Theater of Florida. Eight others close, ten continue their runs and there is one limited engagement.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna released video of the July 2022 incident this week, saying he'd only just learned of it. He said the deputy has been disciplined and the FBI is looking into it.
Final NTSB report on 2024 jet crash on I-75 in Naples shows engine corrosion was main issue
The final report by the National Transportation Safety Board on Flight 823, which crashed during an emergency landing on I-75 in Naples on Feb. 9, 2024, was released Thursday afternoon. It pins the probable cause of the crash on corrosion in both engines that led to lost of thrust and the ensuing crash landing.

Update: New videos show chaos at UF peace vigil; police secretly investigating suicide-bomb threat
The first substantial videos to emerge from a panicked stampede at the University of Florida during a nighttime vigil for Israelis killed in the Hamas attacks show waves of terrified students sprinting out of their shoes, discarding phones and water bottles and colliding with startled and confused police officers who had drawn their pistols searching for a possible gunman through the melee.

“Oasis of Notions” is a solo show of oil paintings by Paul Vincenti that creates a veritable jungle of orchids, bamboo, wild ginger and other plants, with a smattering of hummingbirds and butterflies.
