Hendry, Sarasota counties lift month-long burn bans after rains lift the pressure of dry conditions
The burn ban on unregulated outdoor fires activated in Hendry County has been lifted effective Monday.Bans remain in effect in Charlotte and Collier counties until an official rescission is made by the authorizing body.
Lee County had second highest manatee deaths in 2021; FGCU prof: stopping pollution would help
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission released preliminary numbers Tuesday showing 1,100 of the sea cows perished in the state from causes including boat strikes, cold stress, in flood gates and canal locks, perinatal reasons as well as from natural causes. An FGCU professor says stopping pollution would be one way to help the manatees survive such huge death tolls.
Gov. DeSantis says Florida will appeal denial of FEMA aid for victims of January tornadoes in Lee and Charlotte counties
Governor Ron DeSantis was in Fort Myers Friday morning to address ongoing recovery efforts stemming from damage sustained when tornadoes touched down in Southwest Florida in January. Florida plans to appeal a denial of the state’s request for federal aid.

Lee County arts organizations in jeopardy of missing out on Florida arts and culture grants for third consecutive year
Lee County arts organizations once again find themselves in jeopardy of missing out on Florida arts and culture grants. Although the Florida Division of Arts & Culture approved full funding for 15 Lee County grant applicants, the Secretary of State has recommended funding for only four.

Changes may affect out-of-county and out-of-state use for those using LeeWay transponders
There are some additional areas where LeeWay transponders are accepted and one area where they no longer operate.Lee County’s Department of Transportation and LeeWay said that the transponders now have interoperability with Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
School grades issued: Lee County maintains B rating, mostly A's, Bs for others in Southwest Florida

Glades County unveils new fleet of no-emission electric school buses -- a cool new ride for students
The normal rumble and hiss of big yellow school buses has fallen silent in Glades County for a good and environmentally sound reason — a new fleet of zero-emission, electric vehicles has been pressed into service.On Thursday, the Glades County School District celebrated the arrival of 13 new electric school buses, which replaced over half of the district's aging diesel fleet. The state-of-the-art buses offer students a cleaner, healthier transportation option and, for the first time, provide air-conditioned rides to the majority of district students.
