  • The Indonesian resort island of Bali is still reeling from the second major terrorist attack in three years. The death toll is at 26, with more than 100 wounded. In 2002, blasts blamed on the Islamic militant group Jamaah Islamiyah took 202 lives.
  • The two men believed to be the likeliest masterminds of Saturday's Bali bombings are wily, adept at evasion and good at recruiting others to carry out suicide bombings. The recruits may carry on with attacks even if the two men are captured.
  • At least three demonstrators are killed during a protest outside a NATO peacekeeping base in the northwestern part of Afghanistan. Unrest among Muslims continues in the country, prompted by the publication in European newspapers of caricatures of the Muhammad.

  • Statistics compiled by the Iraqi government and the medical community say that 6,000 people were killed in May and June -- civilians who were victims of spiraling sectarian attacks. The statistics were released by the United Nations.
