Voter registration deadline for the 2024 General Election is October 7
With the Oct. 7 general election registration deadline nearing, those registered are encouraged to update voter information, like name and address. This can be done at an in-person office or on a county Supervisor of Elections website to avoid delays at the polls.
COVID-19 Morning Report
State health officials reported 4,115 new cases of COVID-19, Wednesday, increasing the statewide total to 584,047 cases. Wednesday marked the fourth time this week, the Florida Department of Health reported fewer than 5,000 new cases of the virus in a day.Health officials also reported 174 coronavirus-related deaths, Aug. 19, bringing the state's death toll over the 10,000-death threshold with 10,067 fatalities.

As they continue to fight a legal effort by environmental groups to block an immigrant-detention center in the Everglades, lawyers for Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration argued Monday that the lawsuit was filed in the wrong federal-court district.Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity are seeking a temporary restraining order or a preliminary injunction to stop state and federal officials from adding more detainees and additional construction at the remote facility, which the state built adjacent to an airstrip known as the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport.

FBI describes arrest of missing Christopher Worrell; 'Proud Boy' member was found unconcious
Christopher John Worrell of Naples, a member of the 'Proud Boys' extremist group, who disappeared days before his sentencing in the U.S. Capitol riot case in August, is now in FBI custody. The agency said Worrell was found unconscious his home in Naples after he attempted to covertly return to the Collier County address.
We meet the new Director of Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County has been an Audubon-protected site since the early 1900s and is considered a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Science-based land management practices protect the sanctuary’s 13,450 acres, including the world’s largest remaining, old-growth bald cypress forest. And it's home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including alligators, river otters, and many bird species including the threatened Wood Stork. It's also home to many plant species, including the incredibly rare "super" ghost orchid.We meet the sanctuary’s new director, Keith Laakkonen. Keith is a southwest Florida native with a background in watershed management, environmental policy, wildlife ecology, prescribed fire management, and more.

COVID-19 Morning Report
Thursday saw the highest number of new COVID-19 infections reported in Florida in a single day since the start of the pandemic. State health officials reported 19,816 new cases, Jan. 7, for a total of 1,429,722 cases.The Florida Department of Health also reported 164 coronavirus related deaths, yesterday, increasing the statewide death toll to 22,817 fatalities.
